FIFA Legends Announced as Assistants for World Cup Play-Off Draws
Christian Karembeu, Marco Materazzi, and Martin Dahlin have been confirmed as draw assistants for the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026™ Play-Off Tournament and
European Play-Off Draw, set to take place this Thursday.
The event will define the qualification pathways for the final six spots at the inaugural 48-team FIFA World Cup™, co-hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the United States.
Karembeu and Materazzi, both World Cup winners, along with Dahlin—who played a key role in Sweden’s third-place finish in 1994—will support the draws,
which have been updated in accordance with the latest FIFA/Coca-Cola Men’s World Ranking.
The two draws will be held consecutively at the Home of FIFA in Zurich, Switzerland. The Play-Off Tournament Draw begins at 13:00 CET, followed by the European Play-Off Draw.
Karembeu, a 1998 World Cup champion with France, will assist in the draw for the FIFA World Cup 2026 Play-Off Tournament. The tournament will include his birthplace,
New Caledonia (OFC), alongside Iraq (AFC), Congo DR (CAF), Jamaica, Suriname (Concacaf), and Bolivia (CONMEBOL).
How the Play-Offs Work
Both the six-team FIFA Play-Off Tournament and the 16-team European play-offs are scheduled for the international match window from 23–31 March 2026. In the Play-Off Tournament,
two seeded teams will face the winners of semi-finals contested by unseeded nations. The victorious teams in the finals will secure the last available slots at the FIFA World Cup 2026.
