2026 FIFA World Cup Final Draw Procedures
The key details about the upcoming Final Draw for the expanded 48-team 2026 World Cup are as follows:
1. Draw Overview:
Teams: 48 teams will be drawn.
Format: The teams will be divided into 12 groups of 4 teams (Group A through Group L).
2. Team Allocation and Pot Structure:
The 48 teams will be allocated into four pots of 12 teams each based on the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking.
Pot 1: Contains the 6 automatic qualifiers (Canada, Mexico, USA as hosts; Germany as 2024 EURO host;
and the two highest-ranked pre-selected South American nations, Argentina and Brazil). The next six highest-ranked qualified teams
will fill the remaining 6 spots.
Pots 2, 3, and 4: Will contain the next 24 highest-ranked qualified teams (Pot 2), the following 12 (Pot 3), and the final 12 (Pot 4), respectively.
3. The Draw Procedure:
The draw will proceed in the following order:
Step 1 - Pot 1: All 12 teams from Pot 1 will be drawn and assigned to the first position in their groups (A1, B1, C1, ... L1).
Step 2 - Pots 2, 3, and 4: Teams from Pots 2, 3, and 4 will be drawn one at a time.
For each team drawn from these pots, the following will be determined simultaneously:
The group they are allocated to (A to L).
Their position in that group (2, 3, or 4). This position is relevant for the match schedule.
4. Important Draw Rules:
No Two Hosts Together: As a special rule, Canada, Mexico, and the United States cannot be drawn into the same group. To ensure this,
they will be placed in a "special pot" at the start of the draw and pre-assigned to specific groups (B, C, and E for the 2026 tournament)
before the rest of the Pot 1 teams are drawn.
In essence, the 2026 draw introduces a new four-pot system based on rankings, with a special geographic constraint to separate the three host nations
into different groups from the start.
